Dream about coral or reef
Dreaming about a coral reef usually represents an inner structure built gradually over a long time -a character trait, a bond, a way of coping with life. It's also traditionally linked to a hidden obstacle beneath a calm surface; psychologically, to content you are only partly aware of.
Traditional interpretation
Artemidorus of Daldis, in his Oneirocritica, devotes part of his treatise to the dangers the sea poses to navigation, including shoals and rock formations hidden beneath the surface that can wreck a vessel without warning; a coral reef, invisible at a glance yet capable of stopping a journey outright, belongs to that same family of images: a hidden obstacle beneath an apparently calm surface. Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant, in their Dictionary of Symbols (1969), add a complementary reading: coral, being both mineral and of living origin, is associated in various Mediterranean cultures with protection and slow, cumulative growth, a structure built up over years from tiny contributions.

Psychological reading
In Jungian terms, an oneiric coral reef can be read as an image of a psychic structure -a character trait, a way of coping with life, a bond- that did not form all at once but through many small experiences accumulated over a long time, much as Marie-Louise von Franz, Jung's collaborator, describes slow personality-maturation processes in 'Man and His Symbols' (1964). Unlike the ice floe -a fragment already separated from its origin, adrift-, the reef represents a structure that stays put: it hasn't broken off from anything, but keeps growing layer by layer in the same place where it began forming. At the same time, because it stays underwater and is easy not to notice until you strike it, a reef can also represent an obstacle or vulnerability the person is only partly aware of. G. William Domhoff's dream-content research, building on Calvin Hall's work, notes that underwater imagery tends to coincide with content the person recognizes only partially, particularly during slow maturation processes still underway.

Variants
Swimming alongside a coral reef
Swimming calmly alongside a reef full of life and color usually reflects contact with a part of yourself built over a long time -a strength, a relationship, a craft- that you can finally appreciate as a whole. Traditionally it's read as protection; psychologically, as the visible result of slow maturation.
Running into a reef
Striking or running aground on a reef you hadn't seen usually points to an obstacle that was already there, hidden beneath an apparently calm situation, and that only became evident on impact. It invites looking more carefully at what lies beneath the surface of a matter before moving ahead at full speed.
Bleached coral reef
Seeing a bleached or lifeless reef, where there used to be color and movement, usually reflects the sense that something patiently built over years -a relationship, a project- is wearing down from a lack of care or the right conditions. It signals the need to attend to that structure before the decline goes further.
