Eyes

Not necessarily; in dream interpretation it usually symbolizes a lack of clarity about a life situation, not a diagnosis. If you notice real changes in your vision, see an eye doctor.

Traditional interpretation

Artemidorus read eyes as a symbol of knowledge and of how the dreamer sees or is seen by others; losing sight in a dream was often interpreted as losing clarity about a matter or being blind to something obvious to others, rather than as a literal medical warning, while especially sharp or bright eyes were associated with greater insight. Chevalier and Gheerbrant describe the eye as a universal symbol of consciousness and spiritual vision, the 'window of the soul,' linked in many traditions to protection or judgment — as in the 'evil eye' motif — and also to the all-seeing eye as a figure of divine watchfulness or authority.

Psychological reading

Freud linked eye imagery to anxiety about being seen or judged, and in some cases to symbolic castration (as in his analysis of 'The Sandman'); the contemporary continuity-hypothesis approach (Domhoff) is more practically useful today for everyday interpretation: it reads 'seeing' or 'not seeing' imagery as reflecting the dreamer's current need for greater clarity about a real situation, a felt sense of being watched or judged by others, or even an avoidance of looking straight at something already known deep down but not yet consciously admitted.

Variants

Losing your sight or blurry vision

Often reflects that something in your real life isn't clear yet: a pending decision, incomplete information, or uncertainty about how to move forward in a project or relationship. It's a common symbol during transitions, when you don't yet have all the facts to decide. It can help to ask what specific piece of information you feel is missing to see the situation clearly.

Someone staring intensely at you

Can reflect a felt sense of being watched, judged, or evaluated by others, even when no one is actually paying you that attention. It's common before public exposure — a presentation, an exam — or when you're worried what others will think of a recent decision. It can also signal excessive self-consciousness about your own image or performance.

Extra eyes or eyes in unusual places

Usually signals hypervigilance or heightened attention toward a specific situation you feel needs watching from several angles at once, such as a delicate conflict or a risk you don't want to overlook. It can also appear when you feel you need to 'see' more than usual so as not to miss any important detail in an ongoing matter.
