Rock or stone

Mircea Eliade, in Patterns in Comparative Religion (1958), documents how many ancient religions venerated specific stones -baetyls, menhirs, rock altars- as direct manifestations of the sacred and as fixed points of an unchanging cosmic order, unlike vegetation or water, always in transformation. Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant, in their Dictionary of Symbols (1969), add that stone is almost universally associated with stability, endurance, and memory: what remains when everything else wears away. Psychological reading

Carl Jung, in Man and His Symbols (1964), notes that stone has historically served as one of the most recurring images of the Self: something solid, undifferentiated, and permanent that consciousness seeks out when it feels fragmented or adrift. Applied to dreams, finding or carrying a stone can reflect the search for a stable inner foothold during a period of change. Sigmund Freud, in The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), observes that physical obstacles in dreams -stones, walls, rocks blocking the way- often represent the dreamer's own internal resistances to a wish or decision, rather than real external obstacles. Variants

Stone blocking the path

Finding a rock that cuts off the path usually represents, more than an external obstacle, a doubt or resistance of your own that's still unresolved about a pending decision. Psychologically it invites asking which part of you is really slowing things down, before figuring out how to get around the stone.

Carrying a heavy stone

Carrying a heavy stone in the dream usually reflects a responsibility or worry you already consciously acknowledge, even if it's hard to set down. Unlike the blocking stone, there's no inner resistance here: there's an accepted burden that simply weighs on you and needs to be shared or divided with someone else.

Solid rock as refuge

Taking refuge on solid rock, or building something on it, usually indicates you have found -or are building- a stable base in your life from which to face outside changes. It is one of the more reassuring stone images: recognized firmness, not resistance still waiting to be overcome.
